Rather than tossing them (as I’ve previously done), I’ve been collecting old socks and sweaters with holes in them. After reading about the huge impact clothing has on our environment, I decided to fix the holes and keep the clothes. I’m thankful for YouTube, which has numerous instructional videos on darning holes in garments. Darning is an old skill—but a new one for me.
I’ve now darned four sweaters, and the socks are next. The repair is less than perfect, but I’m happy about it because the imperfect fixes are signs to me of trying to live more sustainably… a little badge of satisfaction for skill-building, change, growth, and caring for the planet.
Perhaps everyone else was ahead of me on this one, but I share it with the thought that someone else might be like me and may find some needs met through darning!
